Sean Dyche has admitted it has so far been a “tough market” as he looks to strengthen his Everton squad this summer.
The Toffees boss has only managed to bring in Ashley Young on a free transfer from Aston Villa and Arnaut Danjuma on a season-long loan deal from Villarreal this window.
Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, Dyche said the club had narrowly missed out on a number of targets as it’s currently a “tough” market to try and get new players through the door at Goodison Park.
We’ll see – it’s a tough market,” he added. “There’s only so much that we can do so we’re working very hard – I can assure everyone of that – to construct deals that can work.
“There’s been situations we’ve been into where we thought we were going to get it over the line and we don’t, and that’s the way it goes. We’re reshuffling the squad the best we can and working hard in the market.”
Discussing his side’s problems in front of goal last season, Dyche said: “A lack of goals is always a concern because you need to score to win games.
We showed in the second half of the season that we needed to find different ways of scoring goals and we’re going to have to do that going forwards, that’s part of football.”
Essential
It’s absolutely essential that Everton manage to strengthen their squad this summer and everyone – including Dyche – knows that simply has to happen after a couple of disappointing seasons.
The club have been linked with a lot of players and the Toffees boss admitted in his interview that they have narrowly missed out on a number of their key targets.
It isn’t time to get desperate and move away from the plan just yet, though, as there are still a couple of weeks before the season kicks off and just over four until the transfer window closes.
But he is absolutely right that he needs to find a way of adding more goals to the squad ahead of the new campaign, as only Wolves found the net fewer times than the Toffees’ 34 strikes last season.
Danjuma should help on that front, but with Dominic Calvert-Lewin struggling for fitness throughout most of last season, a new forward is a must to provide another attacking option
