The Miami Heat will have to make some tough choices this summer, regardless of what transpires throughout the remainder of the season.
The Heat are projected to have one of the biggest payrolls in the league for the upcoming season, but the expense of the roster might not be justified for a club that might make the play-in round for the second year in a row.Adding to the complexity of the second luxury tax increase Miami will encounter. The Heat have stated unequivocally that they do not intend to be a second-tax team and that they will eschew the crippling financial fines and restrictions on roster expansion that come with it.
For the upcoming season, Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo, Terry Rozier, Tyler Herro, and Duncan Robinson are among the five players to whom the Heat owe approximately $157 million. Trading at least one of them and accepting a smaller profit is the simplest method to provide some relief from the cap. However, the Heat may potentially take additional actions to increase their flexibility.
This is where the tough choices must be made. Although some strategies may not be well-liked, they merit investigation.The Heat may have to make a lower offer despite Herro’s name being discussed as a key component in a deal including players like Damian Lillard, Donovan Mitchell, and Kevin Durant for the greater part of the last two years.
Herro’s contract, which pays $29 million the following season, may be difficult to negotiate after this one. Even though his average points (20.8) and assists (4.4) are at career highs, he has only participated in 36 games, and it is uncertain if he will make a return in regular season.Herro may have to be salary-dumped to a young team in need of scoring if the Heat are unable to develop him into a star player this summer with Herro and other assets. It is anticipated that teams like the Utah Jazz, Indiana Pacers, Detroit Pistons, and Orlando Magic will have adequate cap space to accommodate Herro’s contract. The Heat might request draft picks and a player with a lower salary in return.
This might be interpreted as a lowball sale given the trade targets Herro was previously linked to. However, the Heat may also need to get out of their precarious luxury tax predicament.
