Expert urges Liverpool to sign Man City star but it could be too late
Liverpool have been invited to sign Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, although the German international is now moving to FC Barcelona.
Robert Earnshaw tipped the Reds, Arsenal and Manchester United to move to Gundogan. According to Footballer, however, the 32-year-old is now close to agreeing a deal with Barcelona as a free agent.
The midfielder’s contract with City expires at the end of this month, leading to many rumors about where Gündogan will end up this summer. However, it now looks like the £25million transfer will head to Catalonia in the coming days.
But for Earnshaw, Gündogan could have served Liverpool well, with the former striker saying: “He’s the most underrated world-class player there is.” He knows he gives his all in the big moments, so he does everything a top-flight midfielder does, and for some reason people still put him under the radar.
“I think it’s incredible. If someone goes, they get an incredible player. If they’re another football club, then I think ‘Gundogan is my main goal’. If I was Arsenal, Liverpool or even Manchester United, but i doubt he will go there. What a huge asset he will be.
Liverpool should have thought of Gundogan before Barcelona were knocked down
Liverpool’s quest to overhaul their midfield this summer could have taken the Reds to Manchester, where Gundogan would have been a world-class signing given his incredible record for City and his knack for appearing at the right time of the season.
In fact, a deal would have been difficult due to the rivalry between Liverpool and City. But with Gündogan a free agent and heavily linked with Jurgen Klopp, a move would have been possible had Barcelona made such a big push to sign the Germany international now.
Liverpool believe the £50m signing of the PL star is too risky at the moment
