Minnehaha, Oak Park Heights A Minnesota prisoner who partially blinded a guard last year will serve an extra 15 years in jail.
Dominique Jefferson was given a sentence on Thursday by a judge for one count of first-degree assault on a corrections officer.
In 2005, 37-year-old Jefferson was found guilty of second-degree murder aiding and abetting. On January 15, 2023, he went up to an officer in the Oak Park Heights Correctional Facility and said he needed to talk to someone from the crisis intervention team.
Instead, Jefferson told her to “ring the bell,” taking out a clear plastic mouthguard from his jeans pocket and placing it in his mouth, according to the criminal complaint. I’m not stepping in. You’ve been on my mind.”
According to the documents, he then proceeded to strike the sergeant in the eye with a closed hand.
Jefferson cried, “Let go of me and I’ll do the same to every one and every one of y’all,” as more police began to detain him. Charges read, “I’ll remember y’all when I come out.”
The assault caused the prison guard to permanently lose vision in her right eye, according to the criminal complaint. In addition, she required procedures to try to lessen scarring and fix her broken face bones.
Jefferson is still incarcerated at Oak Park.
