It didn’t take long for now-former Mets catcher Tomás Nido to find a new home.
A little over a week since New York designated Nido for assignment to make room for Francisco Alvarez, choosing to stick with Luis Torrens, the 30-year-old has signed with the Cubs. After clearing waivers, Nido rejected being reassigned to Triple-A Syracuse and chose free agency.
In Chicago, Nido chose the Mets’ next opponent. Both teams are set to face off for a three-game set at Wrigley Field beginning on Friday.
Nido isn’t the only former Met playing for the Cubs organization. Nearly two weeks after being DFA’d due to an on-field meltdown that carried on to his postgame availability, Chicago also signed Jorge Lopez to a minor league contract on June 11. Lopez was assigned to the ACL Cubs.
Nido was drafted by the Mets in the 8th round in 2012. He made his big league debut in 2017, appearing in 306 games while batting .214/.251/.313 with 16 home runs and 82 RBIs.
After learning he was being DFA’d, Nido posted a message fans on X/Twitter:
“Thank you, @mets!” Nido wrote on X. “12 years, it was a good run! Wishing the guys nothing but the best
