The New York Mets have a lot of open spots on their pitching staff that must be filled ahead of 2025. Could president of baseball operations David Stearns engage his former club to make a blockbuster trade for Milwaukee Brewers closer Devin Williams?
Baty has been viewed as a top prospect in the past, but he’s had a hard time putting it all together at the big-league level. He owns a .215/.282/.325 line in 602 plate appearances between 2022 and 2024 with New York. The emergence of Mark Vientos at third base may also make him expendable, especially if the Mets re-sign first baseman Pete Alonso via free agency.
MLB.com ranked Acuña as the organization’s 12th-best prospect this season. He only appeared in 14 MLB games but impressed with a .308/.325/.641 in 40 plate appearances. This was accompanied by six extra-base hits (two doubles, one triple and three home runs), six RBI and six runs scored.

The New York Mets have a lot of open spots on their pitching staff that must be filled ahead of 2025. Could president of baseball operations David Stearns engage his former club to make a blockbuster trade for Milwaukee Brewers closer Devin Williams?
Williams was dominant in 2024, posting a 1.25 ERA and 0.97 WHIP, but a prolonged stay on the injured list limited him to 21 2/3 innings pitched. Milwaukee recently declined its $10.5 million club option on the two-time Reliever of the Year. However, he’s still under team control through 2025 and is estimated to earn $8.4 million in his final year of arbitration. Spotrac estimates his market value for a long-term deal at five years and $70 million.
He may not suit up for the Brewers again, though. ESPN’s Jeff Passan noted the right-handed reliever is an offseason trade candidate. Could Stearns and the Mets capitalize on this situation to create an enviable one-two punch at the backend of their bullpen with closer Edwin Diaz?
