Because the slugger is believed to be looking for $200 million, which the Mets are currently not interested in. So, hardball is getting played by their end as well, which indicates that the Mets are already in pursuit of Alonso’s replacement and are no longer going hard for him. It’s the mediocre performance of Alonso in recent years and his age. Alonso ended 2024 with his career-worst .788 OPS and 172 strikeouts. Also, with 34 HRs and 88 RBIs, he is not justifying his slugger role as well. Lastly, Alonso is now 31 years and hence, the Mets might not be interested in offering him more than a three-year deal rather, they will look for future talents. So yes, the chance of Pete Alonso returning to the Mets is unlikely now. It would then be better to look for the options available for the Mets here.
