Mets blockbuster trade land hard-hitting slugger from division rival

The New York Mets seem to be turning a corner in their search for a first baseman.

Last week, it became clear that Pete Alonso is no longer the Mets’ top priority. The four-time All-Star turned down a three-year offer to remain in New York, so the team began pivoting their free-agent search in other directions.

What if, however, the ideal replacement for Alonso is available not in free agency, but via blockbuster trade?

Toronto Blue Jays superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has become one of the most discussed potential trade targets in the game of late, though the team seems unwilling to consider the possibility at the moment, because he’s entering his final year of team control.

With the Blue Jays coming off a last-place finish and the two sides far apart on extension discussions, FanSided’s Cody Williams linked the Mets to a possible trade for Guerrero if negotiations eventually fall apart with Toronto.

“The Mets seem like a bigger threat in free agency than they do on the potential trade market,” Williams wrote. “That doesn’t mean that New York should be ruled out – not in the slightest. But Cohen’s ability to flex his checkbook is his biggest weapon.

What could make the Mets dangerous in the trade realm, though, is if they see value in getting Vladdy in the building for a year with Soto to try and further entice him to land in Queens in free agency next winter.”

According to a report last week from USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, Guerrero is expecting to land at least a $450 million contract, whether that’s an extension from the Blue Jays or a free-agent deal from a new team next winter.

The Mets have money in spades, but jumping the line and trading for Guerrero would be all about winning now. He’s one of baseball’s very best hitters, and the Mets will be playing their 39th season since their last World Series championship in 2025.

Would New York go for the jugular? We’ll see if the Blue Jays indeed make Guerrero available to acquire.
