NEWS UPDATE: All-Pro  Dallas Cowboys player has formally announce his decision to return to the team and reject retirement.

Over the past few days, a few people have announced their retirement. However, Tyron Smith, a tackle for the Dallas Cowboys, is defying the norm.

The two-time All-Pro star is reportedly not quite ready to hang up his boots just yet. According to reports, the 33-year-old wants to play for the Cowboys for at least one more season.

At the end of the previously finished season, Smith’s contract with the Cowboys expired. For this reason, there have been many unfounded rumors that the eight-time Pro Bowler may be ending his illustrious career.

Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News, however, reports that Smith feels he has a little more gas left in his tank:

According to Watkins, “Tyron Smith, the Cowboys’ player with the longest contract, wants to play another season with the team, a person familiar with his thinking told The Dallas Morning News.”

Though he’s willing to come back to Dallas, it’s unclear if the Cowboys really want him back. Smith is still among the best players at his position, but in recent years, injuries have presented a significant challenge.

The Cowboys will now have to decide whether to move on from their 13-year marriage or if they can depend on Smith’s health through 2024–2025.

Mike McCarthy Speaks on Tyron Smith

Head coach of the Cowboys, Mike McCarthy, was impressed with the veteran’s performance in the previous season. During his year-end press conference, the 60-year-old told the media how impressed he was with Smith’s contributions in 2024:

“I believe the most important thing for Tyron is that, in terms of the season’s trajectory and the training regimen that was implemented for him, this is without a doubt the best season I have had with him since 2020,” McCarthy remarked. He was pleased with that, then. It’s a plus, in my opinion, that he won’t be recovering from offseason surgery. We’ll stay in communication as we proceed.

Even with McCarthy’s glowing endorsement, Smith’s availability for the upcoming season is still uncertain.
