Angel Reese addresses GPA rumors at LSU, relationship with Hailey Van Lith

Chicago Sky forward and former LSU basketball standout Angel Reese addressed a variety of topics this week in her debut podcast episode of “Unapologetically Angel,” an introspective look into the life of one of the WNBA’s brightest stars. The initial discussion included Reese’s thoughts on LSU coach Kim Mulkey and rumored GPA issues with the Tigers along with her relationship with former teammate Hailey Van Lith, who transferred to TCU this offseason. Reese has time to touch on various subjects after announcing Saturday her rookie season was over with the Sky. First, Reese explained why she sat out a few games in her final season with at LSU when everyone assumed it was related to academics.

“Coming back to practice, the vibes was kind of weird,” Reese said, via the New York Post. “Obviously, the energy was pretty weird in practice because everyone was like ‘we just lost our first game, we don’t know what to do’ and then our next game wasn’t for another two weeks.

“I didn’t feel like it was in a good mental space for my own team and myself and just being able to give my best self… Me and Kim Mulkey kind of got into about something (in the Kent State game), which is normal, and I respectfully sat the second half. Then after that game me and her had a conversation and we talked about what’s moving forward and it was just best for me to take some time off.

Van Lith helped the Tigers advance deep in the NCAA Tournament with Reese’s help, but her impact at LSU last season wasn’t as impressive as most expected after one of college basketball’s top players arrived from Louisville in the transfer portal.

“We weren’t super close, but I was probably one of the closer people with her on the team,” Reese said on her podcast. “I think she was really distant from everybody else. So I kind of felt bad, so was like let me get close to her and like see who she is, because she was the only white girl. I didn’t want her to feel uncomfortable. I wanted her to feel as comfortable as she could being able to come into a situation where she had to transfer.
