Latest Aston Villa news from BirminghamLive as Unai Emery’s side will soon discover their Europa Conference League play-off opponent
Aston Villa face the prospect of playing Juventus in a two-legged play-off tie to book their place in the Europa Conference League group stage.
Villa will be drawn out of either a seeded or unseeded pot for the play-off draw, which will take place on Monday, August 7, five days before Emery’s side kick-off their Premier League campaign at Newcastle United.
In theory, more seeded teams should qualify for the Europa Conference League than unseeded teams. Villa would prefer to be a seeded team as they’d be more likely to face a team who do not have a high UEFA coefficient, or ranking, which takes into account historical performance.
Currently, Villa are unseeded due to their low UEFA coefficient. This could have changed two weeks ago with two results, but one went against Villa, as Viborg needed to beat Midtjylland in the Superligaen Europa Conference League final on Friday, June 9.
