Daniel Farke already dropped major Leeds United hint on key change he will make at Southampton
Fatigue caught up with Luke Ayling on Saturday as a third game in six days finally forced Daniel Farke to remove him from a Leeds United line-up for the first time in the league. However well Jamie Shackleton did, it’s highly likely the vice-captain returns for the trip to Southampton.
The 32-year-old has once again been picking up the leadership slack in Liam Cooper’s absence and even if his performances have not been perfect, it’s clear how highly Farke rates his attributes. Sam Byram is the only other player over 30 who has started more than two league games this season and he only turned 30 years old 10 days ago, which tells its own story.
“Luke’s influence on the group is massive and you can’t overrate it because it’s so, so important,” said Farke. “He’s obviously a good player, but also, his ability to lead in the dressing room, to give his experience, to make sure everyone is sharp and aware.
“Before the game, he talks a lot in the dressing room, quite important, calms the lads down when it’s necessary, gives them some confidence, sometimes arm around the shoulder, but also sometimes a little kick to get them started. He’s unbelievably important for the group and I’m pretty pleased we have him.
