According to Leeds United’s YouTube channel, Daniel Farke stated during the press conference on Friday that Jaydon Anthony was set to take a penalty kick on Wednesday night in the event that Joel Piroe was unable to, but he was also replaced.
The 23-year-old Anthony received only his second Leeds start on Wednesday in our 1-0 loss to Stoke City. He struggled, not really wanting to participate. His one and only spark, a stray shot and a little nutmeg.
Just before the 70-minute mark, he and Piroe were substituted, and their places were taken by Cree Summerville, Dan James, and Patrick Bamford; Willy Gnonto and Piroe both came off the field. Piroe was the next to receive a penalty.
Before the game, he had been informed that Farke had selected him. In the course of the match, Bamford won the penalty and missed it.
Stoke then added a goal, and the Potters won.As for the missed penalty, Farke remarked during Friday’s Stoke press conference that Anthony was the next in line and that he had a solid record if the Dutchman was unable to take it.
Considering that certain players are experiencing good and terrible days, you have additional possibilities after Piroe, our primary player. Anthony is another; he was substituted despite having a strong record. I disagree that substitutes should take them on.
Although Anthony has scored goals for Leeds, he may be a little unpredictable. The winger does not appear to be the confident player needed from the penalty spot; perhaps this is a confidence issue. At least not yet.
But on Wednesday night, it seemed like any of Leeds’ attackers might have done a greater job than Bamford, who actually took the spot. In the end, his effort cost Leeds not just one point but three.
