Simone Inzaghi, the coach of Inter Milan, intends to make just two changes to the squad that played Atletico Madrid in Salernitana.
According to FCInterNews and Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, the Nerazzurri coach will mainly maintain the current starting lineup while making changes to the wings.
With his team selections against Salernitana on Friday, Inzaghi defied expectations.
According to reports that week, the Inter coach was planning to rotate his team a lot for that particular game.
Inter had a sizable lead at the top of the table heading into it, after all. They were up against the Campanians, who were fighting for relegation, and this matchup was about as simple as it could get on paper.
However, Inzaghi ultimately chose to play a nearly full-strength starting
Inzaghi To Largely Stick With Team That Beat Salernitana Vs Atletico Madrid
Evidently, Inzaghi wanted to take zero risks of a shock result on Friday.
The 47-year-old played a team that was more than capable of taking the three points against Salernitana.
And Inzaghi got his reward for that decision. Inter steamrolled the Granata at the San Siro by a 4-0 scoreline that almost flattered the visiting side.
The Nerazzurri coach did get to rest some key players in the second half with the result well and truly wrapped up, however.
But as far as this Tuesday’s Champions League round of sixteen match, Sky reports that Inzaghi will not have any thoughts of rotating in Europe in view of domestic competition.
It will largely be the same team as against Salernitana when Inter host Atletico.
Stefan de Vrij will therefore be positioned in the middle of the back three. Benjamin Pavard and Alessandro Bastoni will be the Dutchman’s teammates.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Hakan Calhanoglu, and Nicolo Barella will start as the usual midfield trio.
Additionally, Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez, two strikers, will lead the line.
Inzaghi, however, will switch up his wingback positions. Denzel Dumfries and Carlos Augusto will be replaced by Italian internationals Matteo Darmian and Federico Dimarco, respectively.
