The beginning of Mike McCarthy’s time with the Dallas Cowboys was anything but smooth. McCarthy didn’t actually meet the team until August of 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused significant restrictions throughout the NFL. All communication was conducted virtually. Dak Prescott, the Cowboys’ quarterback, suffered a season-ending ankle injury, which did not help as the team finished 6-10 and missed the playoffs for the second straight year.
McCarthy had another opportunity to demonstrate his skills from his time as a player for the Green Bay Packers, where he won a Super Bowl in 2010. The 2021 campaign arrived. The Cowboys’ 12-5 record allowed them to win the NFC East. McCarthy was able to devise a strategy during that season to compensate for They defeated the Minnesota Vikings with backup quarterback Cooper Rush despite Prescott’s absence from the game. Sadly, the Cowboys were eliminated from the playoffs after losing to the San Francisco 49ers at home in the opening round.
McCarthy’s coaching position in Dallas may have been his best one in 2022. During the Cowboys’ season-opening loss to the Tampa Buccaneers, Prescott broke his thumb. Nevertheless, McCarthy kept the team cohesive during Rush’s five-game absence; in his absence, they went 4-1. It is not easy to win that much without your starting quarterback, and Tyron Smith’s limited playing time in the regular season didn’t help. Tyron Smith is a left tackle. After going 12-5 once more and taking Tom Brady’s career to the next level in the postseason, Dallas lost to the 49ers once more a week later.
DeMarvion Overshown, a rookie linebacker, had great expectations for the Cowboys this season, but he tore his ACL in the preseason. Trevon Diggs, an All-Pro cornerback, experienced the same thing prior to the Cowboys’ Week 3 game against the Arizona Cardinals. The Cowboys are now 10-4, atop the NFC East, and have a slim chance of finishing as the top seed in the conference despite these significant losses. For the first time since they had a streak that lasted six seasons from 1991 to 1996, Dallas has secured a postseason berth for the third consecutive year.
This season, McCarthy also risked his reputation as a play-caller when he signed a contract with the Los Angeles Chargers to replace former offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, who led the Cowboys to multiple top-ranked offenses. McCarthy has the Cowboys ranked second in points per game (30.8) and sixth in total offense despite some early offensive struggles. Prescott is having one of his best seasons as a quarterback and is currently leading the NFL MVP competition. He has a reputation for working well with quarterbacks. It’s safe to say that the man is a natural coach.
