Leeds United are listed as one of three English clubs that have shown interest in Philadelphia Union left-back Kai Wagner – and we would be foolish not make a move, as Gianluca Di Marzio gives an update.
Wagner, 26, has starred in the MLS for the last four years. Making the surprise move to Union from his home country in 2019, he has gone on to play 165 times for the MLS outfit – having a hand in 36 goals.
The German is a serious talent and easily, one of the bets full-backs in American soccer. What makes things interesting, is that Wagner’s contract at Union is due to end on December 31. Available, on a free.
Di Marzio reports that Wagner is set to leave his current side when his contract expires. He can already be approached on a pre-contract basis, having entered the final six months of his current Union deal
The Italian reporter says Leeds, West Ham and Brentford have shown interest over the last 18 months. English, Italian and German clubs, too. Clearly, there is an admiration from Leeds in defender Wagner.
Leeds would be foolish not to make move for Kai Wagner
With Di Marzio reporting that he is going on a free transfer, Leeds cannot let this opportunity pass us by. A left-back is clearly a position that Leeds tried to improve in the summer – with Luke Thomas a target.
But leeds failed to bring in a left-sided defender and that is still an area in need of improvement. Sam Byram has excelled, but is injury prone and is right-footed. Junior Firpo is injured – and an exit is likely.
So, if a player like Wagner – who is capable of scoring, creating and defending well – is available on a free, then Leeds have got to move. He would be an incredibly good signing, ahead of January onwards.
