Miami Heat shooting guard Tyler Herro has been a significant topic of discussion during training camp. He has not hidden his feelings and displeasure about being involved in NBA trade rumors all offseason, as he was a centerpiece of the Damian Lillard trade talks with the Portland Trail Blazers.
With no trade for Lillard being consummated by the Heat, as he was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks in a three-team deal that also included the Phoenix Suns, some awkwardness needs to be smoothed over. The Heat have never been shy about shopping around for stars, and this is something that can stem from a deal not getting done.
But Herro has taken the correct mindset into training camp. He is motivated by the Trail Blazers not wanting him in trade talks, as he didn’t want to be in Portland anyway. Heading into Year 5 of his career, Miami is hoping that he can take that next step in his production.
For them to reach the heights they believe capable of, Herro needs to play at a high level. With his four-year, $120 million extension kicking in this season, his performance has to be taken to another level to live up to the deal.
While he has been lauded for his offensive performance, the Heat need to see more on the other end of the court as well. Herro’s defense throughout his career has left a lot to be desired, and an NBA scout slammed him for it
FI Herro ‘a complete liability’ on that end of the court. He added, “The Tyler Herro where it doesn’t matter how he plays defense was the bubble Tyler Herro. Remember him? That’s the Tyler Herro where it was like, “Who gives a s— how he plays defense?” We haven’t seen that guy because he’s not scoring at that clip, he’s not shooting at that clip.”
