Ji-man Choi, a former infielder for the Padres, and the New York Mets have agreed to a minor-league contract. New York used social media to announce the change.
Rich Hill, the starting pitcher for San Diego, was acquired by the Padres from the Pittsburgh Pirates during the trade deadline of the previous season, along with Choi. Choi was brought in to help the Padres fill a bench role in the closing innings, but he was never able to settle into a rhythm.
With the Padres, he had a terrible season, hitting just 0.65 over 16 games with 0 home runs and 2 runs batted in. To compound his problems, Choi suffered a left rib strain early in his Padres career and was placed on the injured list.
Throughout his career, he has spent time with the Los Angeles Angels, New York Yankees, Milwaukee Brewers, and Tampa Bay Rays, bouncing around the league a little. Choi will probably have a chance to join the Mets’ big league roster, and perhaps this season will bring him better fortune.
Choi is employed.234 batting average, 238 runs batted in, and 67 home runs. With the exception of their game against the Padres, of course, we wish him luck with the Mets.
