Salernitana director Luca Esposito is trying to make Boulaye Dia ‘forget about Wolverhampton Wanderers’ after the Premier League club failed to sign the Serie A striker in the summer.
Boulaye Dia appears to be suffering from a hangover from a frenetic summer, with only one goal in five league appearances thus far in 2023/24.
According to the president of Salernitana, the Senegal international was eager to join Wolves before the September deadline. Wolves intended to sign Dia on loan, which could have turned into a permanent transfer worth £19 million in 2024.
Salernitana, however, had no interest in accepting such an offer – one member of the club’s staff quipped that saying yes would have caused a ‘diplomatic incident’ – and their focus now is on helping Dia rediscover the form that made him one of the most feared marksmen in Italy last term.
The appointment of Pippo Inzaghi as Salernitana’s new head coach could assist the former Villarreal and Reims attacker. After all, Inzaghi was one of the best finishers of his generation.
“(Inzaghi) can assist. “Who else can do it better than him?” says Esposito to Tuttomercatoweb. “Make him forget about Wolverhampton and only think about the pitch.”
Dia was a West Ham target during his time in France, and he scored 16 goals in 33 Serie A appearances in his first season in Italy.
Wolves haven’t had a centre-forward capable of scoring in double figures since Raul Jimenez before his injury. Moreover, despite the efforts of the in-form Hwang Hee Chan and the hardworking Matheus Cunha, Gary O’Neil’s side has only nine goals from their first eight Premier League games this season.
