BBC News: Sheffield Wednesday attendance ranking compared to Leeds United in Championship rivals….

Uncategorized

Sheffield Wednesday might not be performing up to the required standards on the pitch, but one thing never in question is the club’s support.

Further proof, as if it were needed, came this week when the club announced that tickets for the trip to Watford later this month had sold out. An allocation of 2,104 was quickly snapped up for the October 21 clash at Vicarage Road.

Whilst the team may be in among the relegation spots, the fanbase is chasing down a play-off place when it comes to average attendances. The Owls rank eighth in terms of highest average attendance, with 25,770 the mean attendance figure so far this term.

Wednesday have had six home games so far with the highest turnout being the opening night crowd of 28,558 against Southampton. The lowest number for a league game at S6 was the 22,975 that turned up for a midweek match with Middlesbrough.

Sunderland are by far and away the leaders in terms of average home attendances in the second tier. The Stadium of Light has seen, on average, 41,640 people rock up on matchdays. That is top by some distance with Leeds (35,338) and Leicester (31,387) making up the top three.

Wednesdayites have some fair treks to come in the next few months. After the Watford clash, following the international break, the Owls make the mammoth trip to Plymouth Argyle on Wednesday, October 25.

Another long journey awaits them on Saturday, November 4 when they trek to Bristol City. And for good measure the fixture computer has thrown out another long-distance trip on a Wednesday night before the year is out. The Owls will travel to Norwich on Wednesday, December 13
