NBA insider Jeff Zillgitt claims that the Miami Heat have their sights set on acquiring Donovan Mitchell. Mitchell is the combo guard that the Heat have been actively seeking. Miami may have a chance if the Cleveland Cavaliers, who now have Mitchell on their roster, decide to trade the All-Star guard.
Mitchell has not agreed to a contract extension with the Cavaliers. His current deal expires in 2024–2025 with a player option for 2025–2026. Trade rumors have been stoked by this uncertainty, and the Heat have emerged as a possible destination. Although the Cavaliers had originally traded for Mitchell in the hopes that he would re-sign, his future has become uncertain due to the lack of an extension.
The Miami Heat are currently ranked as the fourth-best team in the Eastern Conference with a 19–14 record. They do, however, lag behind the Philadelphia 76ers, Milwaukee Bucks, and Boston Celtics. The team’s management thinks they could become more competitive if they have more firepower, perhaps in the form of Donovan Mitchell.
The Heat are keen to add to their roster before the trade deadline, having missed out on Damian Lillard in the previous offseason. With his reputation for producing big plays and scoring goals, Mitchell might be the keystone they need to compete with the best clubs in the East.
The Cavaliers’ choice and Mitchell’s contract status will likely determine whether or not a trade occurs, but the Heat are reportedly prepared to give up players like Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Nikola Jovic in exchange for the gifted combo guard. The Cavaliers’ and the Heat’s goals for the rest of the season will be greatly impacted by the conclusion of these trade negotiations.
