According to Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald, the Miami Heat are anticipated to release guard RJ Hampton from his two-way contract, making room on the roster for another developing prospect.
Hampton appeared in eight games and started two at point guard this season after earning one of Miami’s three two-way spots in October’s training camp. Hampton can still be added to the Heat’s G League affiliate if he clears waivers.
A two-way spot that can be used on a developing player for the remainder of the season was opened by the Miami Heat.
Guard Alondes Williams, who has been producing impressive numbers in the G League, is one of the options to replace Hampton on a two-way contract.
For the Sioux Falls Skyforce, Williams is averaging 22.5 points, 6 assists, 5.1 rebounds, and a shooting percentage of 53.8% overall and 39.4% from three.
Williams was chosen for the NBA G League Up Next Game, which will take place in Indianapolis on Sunday, February 18 at 1:30 p.m. ET at the Indiana Convention Center, as one of the best players in the G League this season. The game is part of All-Star Weekend.
The action follows the trade deadline on Thursday. The front office of the Heat may have sensed that a team was getting close to signing Williams from their G League affiliate, as there are multiple teams with open roster spots. Williams can’t be signed by another team because the Heat have promoted him to a two-way contract.
In the event that the Heat decide not to select Williams, they may choose to select James Bouknight, the 11th overall pick in the 2021 draft who was recently waived by Charlotte, as well as Justin Champagnie, a forward, and Jamaree Bouyea, a point guard, from the Skyforce.
The Heat can use their $5 million taxpayer mid-level exception or veteran minimum salary to fill an open spot on the standard roster. In the upcoming days, it is anticipated that they will survey the buyout market. On Thursday afternoon, we went over some buyout options here.
