Manchester City fans have been surprised to learn today that the deal taking Joao Cancelo to Barcelona isn’t quite as advanced as was thought.
The full-back has been set to join the Catalan giants.
It was decided that Cancelo should go there on loan, as he is not in the plans of Pep Guardiola.
An agreement was reached between City and Barca for Cancelo to join on loan.
Everything seemed on track. Fabrizio Romano has even given it his ‘Here we go’ catchphrase. But some interesting new information has come to light today regarding the deal…
Joao Cancelo currently in jeopardy, Joan Laporta ready to risk his own wealth to register him
The Athletic have today reported that Cancelo’s move is somewhat in the balance.
Barca’s move for the ‘amazing’ Cancelo has been delayed, with the club planning emergency action to rescue their stricken finances.
Cancelo was actually at Lisbon airport ready to take a private plane to Barcelona on Monday. But was told not to fly, because Barca could not yet afford to complete the deal.
Apparently, the situation ‘has been caused by a delay in receiving funds from a commercial agreement reached earlier this month’. That agreement was with German company Libero Football Finance.
They say that Barca ‘requested a change in the agreement, and that it does not believe there has been a delay in the payment’.
It is then added that Barca president Joan Laporta is now prepared to risk his own personal wealth a bank guarantee, to prove the club with an injection of cash to help get the Cancelo deal over the line.
At the moment, he cannot be reigstered.
Man City should avoid dealing with Barcelona in the future
This is a farcical situation, and it is genuinely surprising that City have decided to do business with Barca.
In an ideal world, the club would have simply sold Cancelo to another club permanently.
For some strange reason, they are happy to allow Cancelo to join Barca on loan. But they don’t even have their finances in order at this moment in time.
As recently as July 2023, City had not received all the money from Barcelona for the Ferran Torres transfer.
So it beggars belief why the club have opted to give them Cancelo.
