Leeds United centre-back Liam Cooper rejected a lucrative contract offer from Saudi Arabia in the summer as he hopes to secure a contract extension at Elland Road.
So much has changed with the Leeds squad in the past few months following relegation from the Premier League, but a decent amount have stayed put in an attempt to make it work under Daniel Farke.
Liam Cooper’s strong message to the rest of the squad back in May underlined his commitment to the Whites, despite being sternly tested during the summer.
The Athletic’s Phil Hay revealed this week that Cooper was another that had a contract offer on the table to ditch Leeds in the summer.
Robbie Fowler’s Al Qadsiah were the source of transfer interest in Cooper, tabling a contract worth £40,000-per-week to the Leeds skipper.
However, the 32-year-old turned down the approach as he made it clear to Leeds that he wanted to sign a contract extension this season, as his current deal is due to expire at the end of this season.
Cooper has done everything so far since relegation to prove that he is committed to the club, as he approaches testimonial territory with Leeds in his 10th season at Elland Road.
So far this season, he’s not managed to nail his starting spot over an increasingly impressive Pascal Struijk, but that shouldn’t matter.
The Scotland international will be wanting to remain at Leeds on the chance that the club returns to the Premier League for 24/25, or helping to continue the rebuild in the EFL next term.
An extra year on his current deal, knowing what he does for the squad in the background, could be a fairly easy decision to make.
