Todd Cantwell, a Rangers offensive midfielder, has revealed that he was on the verge of joining Leeds United instead of the Ibrox club in January 2023.
The Whites were busy in January as a Premier League team, aiming to bring in recruits that would help Jesse Marsch’s season.
Marsch only remained a few days after the transfer window closed, therefore the signings he made were ultimately worthless, since Leeds were relegated and two additional managers took over before the season concluded.
Todd Cantwell discusses his interest in Leeds.
It has now been reported that a former Daniel Farke favourite was on the radar at Elland Road during the January transfer window.
Rangers attacking midfielder Todd Cantwell has revealed that he had negotiated personal terms to join the Whites before moving north of the border.
Cantwell spent the second half of the 21/22 season on loan at Bournemouth, with his Norwich future looking up in the air after Farke left, implying that a transfer was only a matter of time.
Speaking on The Beautiful Game Podcast, he said:
“It was close and concrete, but I’m not going to get into the specifics.” There are many people who still work in these clubs, and you never know when your paths will cross.
“For whatever reason, they were unable to reach an agreement.” It had nothing to do with me; it had everything to do with the clubs. The chats were genuine, and the interest was undeniably genuine.”
The timetable for Cantwell accepting terms with Leeds is unknown, although Victor Orta appears to have revived interest in the attacker after being connected with Leeds in the past.
