Birmingham City have confirmed the signing of Republic of Ireland international Lily Agg on a one-year deal, with an option to extend by a further year.
The 29-year-old midfielder joins following the expiration of her contract with Championship rivals London City Lionesses, where she’s been since 2019. She’s also had spells with Brighton, Charlton Athletic, Bristol City and German outfit Frankfurt throughout her career.
Agg was part of Ireland’s 23-player squad at this summer’s FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand and she featured in two of their group stage games against Canada and Nigeria. She has 10 caps in total for her national team and two goals to her name.
Agg becomes Darren Carter’s seventh signing of the summer as she follows Neve Herron, Remi Allen, Katie Dungate, Charlotte Clarke, Charlie Devlin and Ellie Mason through the door. They’ve also extended the contracts of key players including Christie Harrison-Murray, Lucy Quinn, Louise Quinn and Jade Pennock.
Of the pitch, they’ve seen the departure of assistant coach Jo Potter, who made the move to Scotland with Rangers as head coach. However, they did appoint former Brighton manager Hope Powell as women’s technical director in a real statement of intent ahead of the season.
The Blues get their final pre-season game against Liverpool underway on Sunday following England’s World Cup final against Sweden. Carter’s side begin their Championship campaign on August 26 away at Blackburn Rovers as they target promotion back into the Women’s Super League.
