The Mets made what they perceived as a last-ditch effort to sign Pete Alonso by offering him a three-year contract in the $68 million-$70 million range, and when that was rejected, began their pivot away from their slugging first baseman, The Post has learned.”
That deal has an average annual value of $23.33 million, far below what former Mets infielder Carlos Baerga reported he was offered in December (3 years, $90 million). Alonso previously rejected a 7-year, $158 million offer under ousted general manager Billy Eppler.
Soon after it was reported that talks between the Mets and Alonso had devolved, ESPN insider revealed that the team’s interest in another slugger, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had been understated.
“And the Mets, from what I’m told, really want Vladdy,” Olney said on ESPN New York’s “The Michael Kay Show” on Thursday. “Can you imagine Soto and Vladimir Guerrero, both in their mid-20s, those two guys going back-to-back as two great power hitters who don’t strike out very much? It would be dynamic.”
