The Oklahoma Sooners are set to bolster their defensive lineup in the 2025 season with the return of key players and the addition of promising recruits. Notably, defensive lineman Damonic Williams has announced his decision to return for his senior year. Williams, who transferred from TCU in 2024, made a significant impact in his first season with the Sooners, starting all 12 regular-season games and the Armed Forces Bowl, recording 35 tackles and forcing a fumble.
Williams’ return is crucial for Oklahoma, especially considering the departure of several defensive stalwarts. The Sooners are set to lose linebacker Danny Stutsman, defensive backs Woodi Washington and Billy Bowman Jr., and defensive end Ethan Downs to graduation. Additionally, the team has seen eight defensive players enter the transfer portal, including defensive back Kani Walker and linebacker Dasan McCullough.
In addition to Williams, edge rusher R Mason Thomas has also committed to returning for the 2025 season. Thomas led the team with nine sacks in 2024, showcasing his pass-rushing prowess. His decision to stay provides stability and experience to the defensive front, which will be invaluable as the Sooners navigate the challenges of their second season in the Southeastern Conference (SEC).
The Sooners are not only retaining key players but also strengthening their roster through recruitment. Five-star defensive lineman Quincy Ledet Jr. has flipped his commitment to Oklahoma from Georgia and Penn State. Standing at 6’4″ and weighing 290 pounds, Ledet is expected to make an immediate impact with his blend of size, speed, and power.
Furthermore, Oklahoma has secured a commitment from three-star defensive lineman Floyd Dawens Boucard from Miami, Florida. Boucard chose the Sooners over offers from Alabama, Miami, and USC, citing the family-friendly environment and the coaching staff’s commitment to his development as key factors in his decision.
These developments come at a pivotal time for Oklahoma, especially after the departure of first-year defensive coordinator Zac Alley, who accepted the same position at West Virginia. The return of experienced players like Williams and Thomas, combined with the infusion of new talent, positions the Sooners to build upon their defensive strengths as they continue to adapt to the competitive landscape of the SEC.
As the 2025 season approaches, Oklahoma’s defense appears poised to blend veteran leadership with fresh talent, aiming to enhance their performance and achieve greater success in the SEC.
