Pete Alonso, the New York Mets’ star first baseman, has presented the team with an exclusive contract proposal amid ongoing free agency negotiations. According to league sources, Alonso’s camp has offered a three-year deal featuring opt-out clauses, a proposal currently available only to the Mets.
Alonso, who became a free agent after the 2024 season, has been a cornerstone of the Mets’ lineup since his debut in 2019. Known for his power-hitting prowess, he has amassed 226 home runs over six seasons. In 2024, he played all 162 games, batting .240 with 34 home runs and 88 RBIs. His postseason performance was notable, particularly a go-ahead three-run homer in the National League Wild Card Series against the Milwaukee Brewers.
The proposed three-year contract with opt-out clauses offers flexibility for both Alonso and the Mets. Opt-out clauses would allow Alonso to re-enter free agency before the contract’s conclusion if he believes his market value has increased, providing him with potential financial advantages. For the Mets, a shorter-term commitment reduces long-term risk, especially considering Alonso’s age and the typical performance trajectory of power hitters entering their 30s.
Despite this proposal, reports indicate that the two parties are not close to reaching an agreement. The Mets’ front office, led by President of Baseball Operations David Stearns, has shown caution regarding long-term contracts for players nearing 30. This stance aligns with a broader industry trend favoring shorter-term deals for aging sluggers, reflecting concerns about declining performance and durability.
Alonso’s agent, Scott Boras, argues that players with Alonso’s skill set can maintain productivity into their mid-30s, citing historical precedents. However, the current market for first basemen has evolved, with teams exhibiting reluctance to commit to lengthy, high-value contracts. This shift is evident as multiple teams, including the Angels, Mariners, Giants, Blue Jays, and Red Sox, have expressed interest in Alonso but remain hesitant to offer long-term deals.
As negotiations continue, the Mets must weigh Alonso’s significant contributions and fan appeal against the financial implications of his contract demands. Alonso’s desire to remain with the Mets is evident, but he also seeks a contract that reflects his value and provides career security. The outcome of these discussions will significantly impact the Mets’ roster construction and competitive prospects in the coming seasons.
