Breaking news: Texas A&M Aggies fall to No. 10 Oklahoma Sooners for consecutive losses against top-10 teams

The Texas A&M Aggies women’s basketball team faced a challenging matchup against the No. 10 Oklahoma Sooners on January 12, 2025, resulting in a 77-62 loss at the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman, Oklahoma.

This defeat marked the Aggies’ second consecutive loss to a top-10 opponent, following a previous setback against No. 9 UConn.

The game began with Oklahoma asserting dominance early, leading 27-10 after the first quarter.

The Aggies struggled offensively, shooting only 26.9% from the field throughout the game.

Despite these challenges, Texas A&M demonstrated resilience in the second half. They outscored the Sooners 39-33 during this period, showcasing improved offensive execution and defensive adjustments.

Aicha Coulibaly led the Aggies with 16 points, contributing six rebounds, one block, and one steal. Sahara Jones added 11 points and eight rebounds, while Lauren Ware chipped in with eight points and eight boards.

A notable aspect of the Aggies’ performance was their ability to draw fouls and capitalize on free-throw opportunities. They attempted 29 free throws, converting 79.3% (23-of-29), which helped them stay competitive despite shooting struggles from the field.

However, perimeter shooting remained a significant issue, as the team managed to make only 3-of-19 attempts from beyond the arc, resulting in a 15.8% three-point shooting percentage.

Defensively, the Aggies allowed the Sooners to establish an early lead, which proved difficult to overcome. Oklahoma’s balanced scoring attack and efficient ball movement created challenges for Texas A&M’s defense throughout the game.

This loss brings the Aggies’ season record to 8-8 overall and 1-3 in SEC play. The team has faced a rigorous schedule, having played six ranked opponents this season, which is tied for the second most in the nation alongside South Carolina and Louisville.

Despite the recent setbacks, head coach Joni Taylor remains focused on guiding the team through this challenging stretch. Emphasizing growth and resilience, the coaching staff aims to address the offensive inefficiencies and defensive lapses observed in recent games.

Looking ahead, the Aggies are set to host the Georgia Bulldogs on Thursday, January 16, at Reed Arena. This upcoming game presents an opportunity for Texas A&M to rebound from consecutive losses and regain momentum in conference play. Focusing on improving shooting accuracy, particularly from three-point range, and maintaining defensive intensity will be crucial for the Aggies as they prepare for the challenges ahead in the SEC schedule.
