After ending a lengthy wait by defeating Watford 3-0 on Saturday, Sam Byram laughed off Leeds United’s “stick” as he considered the team’s progress and the manager’s message.
Byram, a former Whites Academy product, is currently in his second stint at Leeds after departing in January 2016 for West Ham United and returning in July 2019 to join Norwich City. Prior to that, the defender’s most recent goal was a 20-yard strike for Leeds in a 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest in December 2015; the defender scored once for the Canaries via a deflection in the 1-1 draw at home against West Brom in September 2022.
In Saturday’s excellent 3-0 victory over Championship visitors Watford, nearly eight years after his last goal for Leeds, Byram was able to celebrate once more by scoring for Leeds. His thunderous header from a second-half corner gave Daniel Farke’s team a 2-0 lead after goals from Joel Piroe and Jaidon Anthony.
The Whites had earlier squandered several good chances in a dominant first half, opportunities which Byram admitted his side should have done better with, notwithstanding some smart saves from Hornets keeper Daniel Bachmann.
