Breaking news: Why Haven’t The New York Mets Signed Pete Alonso Yet? Read More

It is still very surprising to me that owner Steve Cohen and the New York Mets have not signed Pete Alonso. He is a franchise player who the fanbase loves, but both sides are at a stalemate when it comes to money and the current first baseman market. Steve Cohen is the richest owner in the MLB and it’s not even close, but why can’t he and David Stearns fork over a few extra millions for him. Below is my quick take on this as seen in The Times Union:

New York Mets owner Steve Cohen has spent close to $1 billion this offseason, it’s puzzling why he won’t dig deep one more time and sign free agent first baseman Pete Alonso to a new deal. While I understand Alonso wants more money than the market, is willing to pay him, he’s still a great player who has devoted his entire MLB career playing for the New York Mets and there is something to be said about that. Alonso fits nicely with Juan Soto and proved and proved at the end of last season he can still hit at a high level.

I hope both sides can come to terms here soon otherwise the Mets will certainly miss Pete Alonso big time. The Mets will still have a talented roster on paper with or without him which includes Juan Soto. This will be very interesting to follow what happens in the coming days with the Mets and first baseman Pete Alonso.

Ten New York Mets’ Players Who Were Arrested, and Why

Professional athletes are just like us: sometimes, they get in trouble with the law. These ten New York Mets’ players were arrested at some point, and here’s why.

A notorious 1986 New York Mets’ story, one that may deserve its own deep-dive article. Teufel and Darling were arrested for aggravated assault on a police officer, despite Teufel showing visible signs of being beaten up by said officer.

Ojeda and Aguilera were both charged with a lesser crime, hindering an arrest. All of this took place at a Houston bar around 2AM.

Wally Backman

On to the individual stories, beginning with well-known hot head, Wally Backman. Backman was arrested in summer 2020 after an alleged domestic dispute, and was released on his own recognizance.

A more recent member of the Metros to have a run-in with the law, Familia was arrested in 2020 for a misdemeanor domestic violence charge. This was later dismissed, after Familia’s wife claimed that the scratches on her was caused by their son.

Octavio Dotel

Dotel was one of two former Mets’ players (scroll to meet the other one) who were arrested in a drug bust by the government of the Dominican Republic. Dotel and his partner were connected to Cesar Emilio Peralta, the same drug kingpin who was reportedly behind the assassination attempt on David Ortiz.

Luis Castillo was working with Dotel in the Dominican, and both were arrested in a ” large government operation against drug trafficking and money laundering”, according to Sports Illustrated. Luckily, both gentlemen were cleared of wrongdoing.

Alex Machillanda (Prospect)

At 21-years old, catcher Alex Machillanda was having a breakout year, hitting .357 through his first eight games in the 2013 minor league season.

Machillanda was arrested for felony shoplifting that summer, and was alleged to have stolen clothes, punched a police officer, and attempted to leave the scene.

He was released by the Mets that year, and has not caught on with another organization since.

Pete Walker

Walker threw in 16 games with the Mets over three seasons, and appeared in 144 games in his MLB career. He was appointed pitching coach of the Toronto Blue Jays in 2012, and has remained ever since.

Last month, on March 26, Walker was arrested and charged with a DUI. He was released from custody that day, and has remained with the team.

Lenny Dykstra

Lenny and I had a chat over Twitter. I phrased this section poorly. So, here goes the edited version:

Lenny Dykstra has had a few issues during his career, as well as after. The most notable of all of the charges saw him spend 6.5 months in prison for bankruptcy fraud, grand theft auto and drug possession.

He has been out and living a good life for over three years, though, and will celebrate his four-year anniversary in May.

Darryl Strawberry

Darryl Strawberry

There’s a silver lining for each of these next two stories. Strawberry had multiple run-ins with the law during the 1980s and 1990s, and claimed on our show that it played a huge part in derailing his career.

He has been arrested for failure to pay child support payments, drugs, soliciting a policewoman who was posing as a prostitute, and other charges, as well.

Since then, however, he has written books, spoke to groups, and become a pillar for clean-living and recovery for those who are struggling with addiction.

Dwight Gooden

Dwight Gooden

Another player who has turned negatives into positives in their post-playing career, is Dwight Gooden. Gooden was arrested in 1986 for violence, battery on a police officer and disorderly conduct, and was arrested as recently as 2019.

In recent years, however, Gooden has worked to curb his legal issues, and has even been consulted by Major League ballclubs to help younger players, like Matt Harvey, who are going through struggles.
