BREAKING NEWS: why Kylian Mbappé force the reverse of transfer problem Liverpool knows

Kylian Mbappé and PSG are not in a great situation with the new season just around the corner. Liverpool has been in a similar position before, but in reverse.

Even if Kylian Mbappé runs down his PSG contract and leaves next summer when it expires, it is highly unlikely that he would be a realistic target for Liverpool thanks to the wages he would demand.

The 24-year-old has, after all, only just been offered a 10-year deal to stay at PSG and earn $2.14m (£1.66m/€1.92m) every week for the entirety of the next decade, according to Defensa Central — despite that, someone somewhere is likely to make the Liverpool link.

With Mbappé having just been left out of PSG’s pre-season trip to Japan as a result of him refusing so far to agree a new contract (the French giants suspect that he has already told Real Madrid he will join them in 2024), the world’s best player is in turmoil.

As reported by Spanish outlet Marca, it would cost in excess of $445m (2£346m/€400m) for Real Madrid to sign Mbappé this summer when you factor in his transfer fee, which could reach $173m (£223m/€200m), as well as other costs including his salary.

For now, at least, Real Madrid is not willing to commit that amount when it can negotiate from January over a free transfer move for the forward (free in terms of there being no transfer fee). That stance seems sensible, especially in the context of the big money committed already this summer on Jude Bellingham.

All of that is making for almost a reversal of the situation Liverpool found itself in with star man Philippe Coutinho six years ago, with Barcelona pushing to sign the Brazilan in mid-August.

For PSG, though, there is a reverse scenario unfolding: the player wants to stay; the club wants him to go.

Last summer, when Mbappé was paraded around as having signed a three-year deal, his contract actually was only for two years, with the option of a third if he wanted it.

With Mbappé having made clear that he does not intend to sign up for that final year, PSG is powerless at this moment in time to keep him until 2025 — in fact, it actively wants to move him on now in order to avoid losing out on a transfer fee for the most valuable player in the world

In the Coutinho situation — the more normal scenario — Liverpool did not want to lose a key player and only did so on inflated terms a few months later. With Mbappé, it is the club that wants rid and the attacker who would rather remain put.

Either way, these transfer messes only generally end up resulting in a parting of ways. The chances of Mbappé signing a new contract with PSG seem slim and the chances of him ending up anywhere apart from Real Madrid are just as small.

But where Liverpool had the power, to a certain extent, with Coutinho, PSG was backed into a corner last summer by granting Mbappé’s demands. The Ligue 1 side is now facing the consequences.
