Breaking news:Banned star Ezra Mam returns to training with Broncos

Brisbane Broncos’ five-eighth, Ezra Mam, has resumed training with the team following a tumultuous off-season marked by legal issues and rehabilitation. In October 2024, Mam was involved in a head-on collision in Brisbane, leading to charges of drug driving and driving without a license. The incident resulted in injuries to a four-year-old girl, who sustained a broken hip.

In response to the charges, Mam voluntarily entered a Brisbane wellness facility, where he spent a month undergoing rehabilitation. This stint reportedly cost him over $100,000. Upon completing the program, Mam expressed remorse and a commitment to personal improvement, stating, “I understand the seriousness of the situation… I’m prepared to work hard to live up to those expectations going forward.”

The Broncos organization has been supportive yet cautious regarding Mam’s reintegration. New head coach Michael Maguire emphasized the importance of a measured approach, noting, “We need to make sure we are slow about our decisions because we have to see everything for what it is.” The club allowed Mam to spend additional time away from pre-season activities, with plans for his return to training after the Christmas break.

Mam’s legal proceedings concluded in December 2024, where he pleaded guilty to the charges. He was fined $850 and received a six-month driving disqualification, avoiding a recorded conviction. This outcome drew criticism from some commentators who felt the punishment was lenient.

Despite these challenges, the Broncos have decided against terminating Mam’s contract. Instead, they are focusing on supporting his rehabilitation and ensuring he meets the club’s standards moving forward. Mam has been participating in a strict training regimen, including twice-daily sessions at the Broncos’ Red Hill facility, alongside laboring work during the off-season.

The NRL Integrity Unit is closely monitoring the situation and is expected to impose sanctions following the court’s decision. While Mam is currently free to train, his availability for the upcoming season remains uncertain, with potential suspensions looming. The Broncos are preparing for various scenarios, including adjustments to their roster and game strategies, to accommodate any enforced absences.

Mam’s return to training marks a significant step in his journey toward redemption. The Broncos and their supporters are hopeful that he can overcome these setbacks and contribute positively both on and off the field in the future.
