Breaking news:Chargers signing former Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott ahead of playoffs, per reports

The Los Angeles Chargers have bolstered their backfield by signing veteran running back Ezekiel Elliott to their practice squad ahead of the NFL playoffs.

Elliott, 29, was released by the Dallas Cowboys on December 31, 2024, after appearing in 15 games during the season. His release was intended to provide him with an opportunity to join a playoff-bound team. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones expressed gratitude for Elliott’s contributions, stating, “We thank him, love him and wish him the absolute best.”

During the 2024 season, Elliott recorded 226 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 74 carries, along with 12 receptions for 69 yards. His performance marked a decline from his earlier years, with a career-low average of 3.1 yards per carry.

The Chargers, who finished the regular season with an 11-6 record, secured the No. 5 seed in the AFC and are set to face the Houston Texans in the Wild Card round. Their backfield has been effective, led by J.K. Dobbins with 905 rushing yards, but has faced injuries, notably to Gus Edwards, who has been dealing with an ankle issue.

Elliott’s addition provides the Chargers with a seasoned option, particularly valuable in short-yardage and pass-blocking situations. His experience and familiarity with high-stakes games could be beneficial as the Chargers aim for a deep playoff run. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the team hopes to get Elliott “up to speed quickly,” indicating plans to integrate him into the active roster promptly.

Elliott’s decision to join the Chargers was influenced by his fit with head coach Jim Harbaugh and quarterback Justin Herbert. Several playoff-bound teams had shown interest in Elliott, but the alignment with the Chargers’ offensive scheme and leadership played a pivotal role in his choice.

This move marks Elliott’s fifth playoff appearance in his nine-year NFL career. His previous postseason experience includes multiple Pro Bowl selections and two rushing titles during his tenure with the Cowboys. As the Chargers prepare for their upcoming matchup, Elliott’s presence adds depth and versatility to their offensive arsenal, potentially enhancing their ground game during the critical playoff stretch.
