Under the guidance of defensive tackles coach Todd Bates, the Oklahoma Sooners’ interior defensive line showcased significant improvement in 2024, demonstrating their readiness for Southeastern Conference (SEC) competition. The unit’s development was instrumental in elevating Oklahoma’s defense, particularly in stopping the run.
The Sooners concluded the regular season ranked 11th nationally in rushing defense, a substantial leap from their 58th-place finish in 2023. This advancement is largely attributed to the enhanced performance of the defensive tackles. Veteran Da’Jon Terry delivered the best season of his career, recording 22 total tackles, five tackles for loss, and 0.5 sacks. His experience, including two seasons at Tennessee, provided valuable leadership to the defensive front.
TCU transfer Damonic Williams also made a notable impact, achieving a career-high 35 total tackles, five tackles for loss, and one sack. His return to Oklahoma fortified the defensive line’s foundation, contributing to the unit’s overall success.
Junior Gracen Halton emerged as one of Oklahoma’s most explosive linemen. After combining for 21 total tackles and five tackles for loss in his first two years, Halton surpassed those numbers in 2024, tallying 30 tackles, six tackles for loss, five sacks, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery. His speed and finesse off the snap were pivotal in disrupting opposing offenses. Halton’s exceptional performance earned him the SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week honor in September.
True freshman Jayden Jackson made an immediate impact by becoming one of the few true freshmen to start a season opener at defensive tackle in Oklahoma’s history. He contributed 30 tackles, three tackles for loss, and two sacks over the season. Jackson’s efforts were recognized with a selection to the Freshman All-SEC Team, underscoring his significant role in the defense.
The defensive line’s versatility allowed the Sooners to implement various defensive schemes effectively. The strength of the interior line enabled defensive coordinator Brent Venables to deploy odd-front formations, enhancing the defense’s adaptability against diverse offensive strategies.
A highlight of the season was the defensive line’s performance in Oklahoma’s 24-3 upset victory over Alabama. The Sooners limited the Crimson Tide to just 70 rushing yards, with the interior line’s disruption playing a crucial role in neutralizing Alabama’s offensive game plan.
Looking ahead, the return of key players like Williams, Halton, and Jackson, along with the anticipated contributions from former five-star recruit David Stone, who battled injuries during his freshman season, positions Oklahoma’s defensive line for continued success in 2025. While there is room for improvement in pass rush production beyond Halton’s contributions, the unit’s performance in 2024 has established a solid foundation for the future.
