Broncos Shut Down 49ers’ Pursuit of Former DT D.J. Jones.

The San Francisco 49ers had their sights set on a reunion with defensive tackle D.J. Jones, but the Denver Broncos made sure that didn’t happen. According to league sources, the 49ers expressed interest in bringing Jones back to bolster their defensive line, but the Broncos ultimately shut down any possibility of a deal.

Jones, who signed a three-year, $30 million contract with Denver in 2022, has been a key piece of the Broncos’ defense. Despite speculation that Denver might part ways with him to clear cap space, the team opted to retain the veteran lineman, denying the 49ers a chance to bring him back to the Bay Area.

During his time in San Francisco from 2017 to 2021, Jones became a fan favorite for his run-stuffing ability and disruptive presence on the defensive line. His departure left a void in the 49ers’ interior defense, and with their recent emphasis on strengthening the trenches, it’s no surprise they were interested in a potential reunion.

However, the Broncos have made it clear they still value Jones’ contributions. Despite a rocky 2023 season, Denver’s front office sees him as an integral part of their defensive scheme moving forward. While the 49ers will now have to explore other options, Jones remains in Denver, anchoring the Broncos’ defensive front for at least another season.

For San Francisco, this means shifting their focus elsewhere in free agency or the draft to address their interior defensive line needs. As for Jones, he’ll continue making an impact in Denver, proving why the Broncos were unwilling to let him go.
