Coventry City pre-season news from Coventry Live as Sky Blues boss admits club’s development players have impressed him, with some getting closer to the first team
While Mark Robins’ search for new signings continues the Coventry City manager admits that the club’s own young players have given him plenty of “food for thought” ahead of the new season.
Brought in to supplement his sparse looking squad at the start of pre-season when the Sky Blues only had 13 fit seniors available for the training camp to Portugal, Robins promoted eight youngsters from the development squad and Under-18s who made the trip and subsequently featured in the club’s friendly fixtures.
Appearances have naturally tailed off as new recruits have dripped over the line, City now having made eight senior signings so far. But Robins is delighted with what he’s seen from his young players, some of whom, he says, have forced their way into his thinking in terms of his wider first team squad.
“The youngsters have been doing well and we have needed them to supplement what we’re doing and enable us to fulfil fixtures,” he said.
It helps with the development of the young players and helping one or two come through. I like a lot of what I have seen so that’s testament to John Dempster and the academy staff that are working with him.”
He added: “There have been one or two who have shown up really well, the likes of Justin Obikwu and Evan Eghosa, and then there’s Kai Andrews who is only 16 years of age. So there are some really good young boys there and we’re getting a first look at them because they are obviously based at the Higgs and we don’t get to see much of them, so it’s been a really useful exercise in terms of that. And some of them will stay around with us.
