Sky Blues loan star Luke McNally confirms move to new club
Former Coventry City loan star Luke McNally has joined Stoke City on a season-long loan from Burnley.
The aggressive 23-year-old centre-back, whom the Sky Blues attempted to buy earlier in the transfer window, had been on Stoke’s wanted list in January when he ended up going on loan to Coventry, whom he helped reach the Championship play-off final.
Coventry have been among the clubs to be in hot pursuit this summer but it’s Stoke who have won the race as Burnley sanction his exit to the bet365 Stadium in time to be involved against Rotherham in Saturday’s curtain raiser. In fact, Stoke’s swashbuckling performance in beating Coventry in April helped seal the deal.
He said: “The manager fills me with belief that he will help me to develop as a player and that the trajectory of the club is going in the right direction.
“I have been really impressed coming up against his teams, especially in the game against Stoke, which was the toughest match I had last season.
“I enjoy the tactical aspect of games and I could tell that lots of detail had gone in to how Stoke set up to hurt Coventry that day.
The scope is massive here, it is a really good opportunity for me and I believe, with the squad that is being built, that we can achieve great things.”
McNally started his senior career with Drogheda United and St Patrick’s Athletic in Ireland before moving to Oxford United in 2021. His outstanding performances in League One earned a move to Burnley last summer.
