On March 13th, sixteen players for the Dallas Cowboys will be eligible for free agency. Nearly half of the sixteen made major contributions in 2023, so the Cowboys will have to make some tough choices over the course of the next month and a half.
We’re looking at Dallas’ 16 upcoming free agents today as we continue our series on free agent profiles. Tyron Smith, a left tackle for Dallas, is the player with the longest contract.

Year Review: Tyron Smith had never been more under suspicion before the 2023 regular season than he was going into his 13-year NFL career. In just 17 regular season games between 2020 and 2022, the outstanding left tackle suffered serious injuries every year.
During it all, one thing was evident. Smith could still play like one of the best tackles in football when he was able to be on the field. The challenge wasn’t his play; rather, it was figuring out how to keep him active and healthy throughout the entire campaign.

As a result of his exceptional season, Smith was named an All-Pro for the first time since 2016 and the fifth time overall. In 2023, the 33-year-old tackle disproved his detractors by demonstrating that he is still fully capable of playing at a very high level.
Free Agency Outlook: Spotrac projects that Smith will sign a $7.5 million, one-year contract on the open market. Pro Football Focus is a little more optimistic about Smith and believes he will sign a $10 million one-year contract. Overall, it appears likely that he will sign a contract between $7 and $10 million for his next deal.

All things considered, every team strives for outstanding tackle play. Smith would not need a long-term commitment and can provide a team with that, which makes him a very appealing target for many organizations.
Cowboys Verdict: Although the Cowboys have a lot of holes to fill on their roster this offseason, they made a fairly easy choice in regards to Smith. They must take all necessary steps to come to an extension agreement before Smith becomes a free agent if he wishes to play on.
The Cowboys may not have the same chance of winning the Super Bowl as the Bengals, Lions, or Chiefs, but they may have the advantage of Smith’s comfort and familiarity in Dallas if they can hold onto him.
