Jerry Jones, the general manager and owner of the Dallas Cowboys, discussed defensive coordinator Dan Quinn’s departure from the team to take a position as head coach of the Washington Commanders with reporters on Sunday.
Quinn most recently spent the last three seasons as the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator. Dallas finished the previous regular season ranked fifth in the NFL in total defense (299.7 yards allowed per game), according to ESPN stats. On the other hand, in the Cowboys’ 48-32 wild-card playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers on January 14, they gave up 143 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground.
Mike McCarthy, the head coach of Dallas, is about to enter his last year of employment, a topic that has received a lot of attention. Jones implied that the club’s efforts to find Quinn’s eventual replacement won’t be impacted by McCarthy’s status.
“I don’t think that will be a problem at all,” Jones stated regarding McCarthy’s hazy future. “They will be the Cowboys’ coordinator if they accept the position. They would be examining that immediately along with everything that goes with it. As the person who recently departed is a head coach, so aspiring coaches are aware that there is a chance to hold that position somewhere.”
If McCarthy’s team isn’t able to make it to the NFC Championship Game or better next season, Jones may go after Bill Belichick. Theoretically, these rumors might make some prospective coordinators reconsider accepting a position that might be eliminated in less than a year.
