Fabrizio Romano has said that Manchester City are aiming to wrap up a deal for Matheus Nunes in the next day or so.
The Citizens have been trying to sign the Wolves midfielder but saw their first bid worth £47m rejected by the Midlands club.
Having now made a second bid for the player, with just three days left before the summer transfer window closes, one journalist has shared the latest behind-the-scenes details on the matter.
Speaking in a recent edition of The Here We Go Podcast, Romano had this to say about City’s pursuit of Nunes.
He said: “I think they will not arrive on deadline day for the Matheus Nunes deal. This is not City’s style to be involved in deadline day so I think they will try to complete it later today or tomorrow but the agreement with Wolves is considered close.
The player didn’t train with Wolves to force this move to Manchester City. He agreed personal terms with City, so Mateus wants to go to Man City, this is very clear.
“The contract is ready, the relationship between the player’s side and City is excellent so now it’s just a matter of reaching an agreement with Wolves.
“The second bid was submitted on Sunday as I reported and the bid is in the region of €60m (£51m) plus add-ons, so this is the proposal from Man City.
“From Wolves, they always wanted something around £60m, so there is still a gap between the two clubs but the negotiating is ongoing and when the player is pushing like this, I see Matheus Nunes going to City.”
Yesterday, as Romano mentioned, it was reported the 24-year-old refused to train with his current club on Sunday or Monday, in an effort to put pressure on the Old Gold and see them agree a deal with City.
After arriving at Molineux last summer in a deal worth £38m from Sporting CP, the midfielder has made 41 appearances for the club across all competitions, 34 of which came across their previous Premier League campaign, which highlights how much of an important player he is for Wolves.
With the player and City clearly wanting to get this proposed deal wrapped up as quickly as possible, it’ll be intriguing to see whether Wolves hold firm in their valuation and risk keeping hold of a potentially unhappy player that they’ll have to discipline for missing training, or cash in before deadline day and look to spend the money they get for Nunes elsewhere
