The state champion long jumper selects the Gamecocks over in-state schools UCF, South Florida and Florida State.
Recent Olympia High graduate and former Titans girls track-and-field star, Omaria Gordon, has selected where she will continue her athletic and academic journey: the University of South Carolina, officially signing her national letter of intent on June 30.
Despite a plethora of offers from the likes of Ohio State, UAB, Liberty and others, Gordon’s choice came down to four schools: USC, Florida State, South Florida, and the hometown team, UCF.
“I had so much support on my signing day,” Gordon said in a post to her X account. “I’m so thankful for everybody who believed in me and was patient throughout my track journey. It was a special day that I shared with my friends and family.”
Gordon shined in her senior year for the Lady Titans winning the Metro West championship in the 400-meter dash, 100-meter hurdles and long jump; the Class 4A, District 9 titles in the 100 hurdles, long jump and triple jump; the 4A, Region 3 title in the long jump; and the 4A state championship in the long jump.
The most impressive part of Gordon’s senior season was that state championship-winning jump. She recorded a jump of 20-feet, 9-inches — which was not only good enough to earn the gold medal, but it also set a Central Florida record, was the top jump in Florida this year and was a length that only three other girls high school track athletes in the United States surpassed this season.
She also finished fourth in both the triple jump and 400-meter hurdles at the state meet.
