deal Done: The Mets formally acquire another young catcher from the Yankees.

The New York Mets are now experiencing yet another dismal season. With little over a third of the season remaining, the blue and orange, who were viewed as a sneaky third wild-card candidate coming into the season, are 10 games below.500 (23–33).

It has been difficult for the Mets to acquire reliable output from the catcher position.
The Mets’ inability to produce from the catcher position after Francisco Álvarez went down with a ruptured ulnar collateral ligament that necessitated surgery has been one of the main causes of their problems. David Stearns, president of baseball operations, decided on Friday to stop the bait. He traded for a depth catcher from the Yankees to cover for Omar Narváez, who he designated for assignment.

The New York Yankees have traded catcher Luis Torrens to the Mets for $100,000, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

On July 2, 2012, Torrens signed a free agency contract with the New York Yankees, marking the start of his baseball career. The product of Venezuela then spent a few years in the Yankees’ minor league system. In the 2016 Rule 5 draft, the Cincinnati Reds selected him, and they promptly transferred him to the San Diego Padres.

Only twenty years old, Torrens had never played beyond single-a before he was added to the Padres opening-day roster in 2017. After playing in 56 games and posting a slash line of.163/.243/.203 with seven RBIs, the right-handed batter spent 14 games with the major league team over the course of the following two seasons until being moved to the Seattle Mariners at the 2020 trade deadline.

In2021, Torrens would earn his first opportunity to play every day with the Mariners, finishing 108 games with a slash line of.243/.299/.431 that included 15 home runs and 47 RBIs.
The 2022 season saw the Venezuelan native fail to repeat that kind of success, bouncing between Triple-A Tacoma and Seattle before being declared non-tenured at season’s conclusion.

Beginning in 2023, Torrens would sign a minor-league contract with the Chicago Cubs.
