Superstar first baseman Pete Alonso and the New York Mets have reportedly discussed extending his contract, according to Will Sammon of The Athletic.
It was reported back in December that the Mets and Alonso’s camp still hadn’t had any talks. Nothing has changed regarding this.
Scott Boras, Alonso’s agent, has repeatedly expressed that the team is willing to talk to David Stearns, the president of baseball operations for the Mets, about an extension.
Trade rumors began to circulate when Alonso entered the final year of his arbitration in 2024. But Stearns has stated multiple times that he believes Alonso will start at first base for the Mets on Opening Day of the 2019 season.
If the Mets are out of contention, it is very likely that Alonso will be traded at the trade deadline, or he will become a free agent and New York will have to fight with other teams to try to re-sign him.
While an extension doesn’t appear to be likely at the moment, Stearns did say back in November at GM meetings that the Mets would have those discussions with Alonso this winter. These talks typically occur in February or March, so time will tell if they come to fruition.
