Willy Gnonto was a target for Everton in the summer but Leeds United were firm in their ‘not for sale’ stance
‘Should I stay or should I go?’ Not just lyrics from the Clash but the question that Willy Gnonto faced during the summer transfer window.
Despite a very public attempt to force a move to Premier League side Everton, Leeds United stood firm with their stance. The young Italian international was not for sale despite being forced to train on his own away from Daniel Farke’s first team.
In the end, Gnonto would apologise for his behaviour and was handed a second chance by Farke but that would be the last of it. The 19-year-old has one goal and assist to his name in six Championship appearances, with an ankle injury disrupting his campaign.
We’ve not yet quite seen the performances many expected from Gnonto this season, with the youngster tipped to have a devastating impact on the second tier of English football. It remains to be seen whether interest will still be there come the January transfer window but if he does still want a move away from Elland Road, there needs to be a stark improvement in the final third.
Gnonto is aware that Farke will not give him a second chance, and his teammates will be cautious given how that particular scenario played out. He needs to get better in order to surpass his high potential as a player, which was only highlighted by his poor start to the previous campaign.
