Man City now want to sign ‘spectacular’ Liverpool target after missing out on Declan Rice.
Manchester City have joined Liverpool in the race to sign Celta Vigo midfielder Gabri Veiga.
Liverpool have long been named as one of the front-runners to sign Veiga this summer. Talks with his agents are already said to have taken place as they mull over paying his £34m release clause.
Chelsea have been another high-profile suitor, but up until now City have been focused on West Ham’s Declan Rice. But with Rice now set for Arsenal, journalist Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Pep Guardiola will turn his attention to Veiga.
“Manchester City have entered the race for Spanish talent Gabri Veiga after pulling out of Declan Rice deal,” Romano reports. “He’s one of the options now being considered at the club.
“Liverpool and Chelsea remain interested but City also informed now. Release clause: €40m [£34m.
Man City join Veiga scramble
This is potentially pretty bad news for Liverpool. With Guardiola at the helm and City obviously in the Champions League next season, you can see why they’d be more attractive to someone like Veiga.
Thankfully though, it seems as though the 21-year-old is more of a back-up option in the market for the Reds.
The likes of Khephren Thuram and Manu Kone seem like more urgent targets, while links to Dominik Szoboszlai have ramped up today.
With a relatively low release clause in his contract, you get the impression that if Liverpool really wanted Veiga, they’d have pushed to get him by now.
Of course, that could turn out to be a mistake. If City are also keen on bringing him to the Premier League, then you know he must have something about him.
Indeed, Veiga has been called ‘spectacular’ by Spanish U21 coach Santi Denia [Marca]. We haven’t seen all that much of that ability at the ongoing U21 Euros. Denia has actually been starting Veiga from the bench up until now.
Nevertheless, there’s clearly a very special player in there. With his release clause triggered, the youngster is going to be a bargain for someone. Let’s see if City joining the party leads to any more urgency from Liverpool.
