Shakhtar demand a compensation of €25.5m from Tottenham over the Manor Solomon signing
According to Adam Crafton for The Athletic (subscription required), Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk demand a compensation of €6.5m from Tottenham over the signing of Manor Solomon.
Earlier in the summer, Spurs signed Solomon on a free transfer from Shakhtar. The Israel international signed a five-year contract with the club.
The winger joined Fulham last season on loan after exercising a FIFA rule that allows non-Ukrainian players to suspend their contracts with Ukrainian clubs following the war situation in that country.
Coming back to report in The Athletic, Solomon’s original contract with Shakhtar was due to run until the end of this calendar year. The Ukrainian club’s CEO Sergei Palkin made it clear in June that any club trying to sign their players without paying any transfer fee would face legal action.
In response to that, Tottenham are offering them a sell-on fee if they sell Solomon in the future. Negotiations are ongoing between the clubs to find a suitable solution.
Shakhtar are not wrong here. Their player, who was under contract with them, got sold to another club on a free transfer. It is understandable why they are demanding compensation rather than waiting for the player to be sold by his current club to get the sell-on fee.
Let’s hope this matter is resolved before the season starts. The best solution would be for Spurs to pay some of the compensation fees now and leave the rest as a percentage for when the player is sold in the future.
The last thing we would want is a legal case drawing the club’s name in court. Solomon is a shrewd signing and it won’t be the end of the world to pay some transfer fee, even if it is weeks after he signed for the club.
If, however, the club believe they did everything by the book and the case will hold in court, then it would make full sense to challenge the Ukrainian club’s demands.
