FINALLY: Rangers have offered an explanation for the fourth official’s smile and nod” following the Hampden goal.

Following Rangers’ goal against Hearts in the Viaplay Cup semi-final, Andy Halliday has provided a possible explanation for fourth official David Dickinson’s “smile and nod” at Phillippe Clement. The Ibrox side’s goal during their 3-1 victory over the Jambos secured their spot in December’s Hampden showpiece finale.

The moment was captured on Viaplay’s cameras and went viral on social media, with punters suggesting Dickinson was pleased to see Gers score in the game. One supporter, a Celtic fan, called into Clyde 1 Superscoreboard to insist it was a “bad look,” to which host Gordon Duncan posed the question to Halliday.

And the former Light Blues midfielder suggested all may not have been as it seemed after Dickinson and Clement had been “bickering” throughout the game.

“But let me tell you, Philippe Clement was harassing the fourth official for at least 35 minutes prior to what would have been the 60th minute. Too many choices: whether to book Cantwell and whether to award free kicks.
“Let’s just say the back and forth between them was ongoing and pretty frosty at the time.”I don’t want to overanalyze anything, but was it a case of “okay, you can relax now that your team is up 2-0 or 3-0?”
