Francisco Alvarez of the Mets declared his return to after receiving counsel from Salvador Perez.

The New York Mets opted not to pursue a Pete Alonso contract extension this offseason, making it very clear early in the winter that it wasn’t a realistic option. The Los Angeles Dodgers’ collection of notable names continues to grow.

Jeff Passan of ESPN reported Wednesday that the Dodgers are acquiring utilityman Cavan Biggio in a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays. The 29-year-old Biggio was just designated for assignment earlier this week by Toronto, who will now be trading him for a return instead of placing him on waivers. Right-handed reliever Braydon Fisher will be headed back to the Blue Jays in exchange for Biggio.

Biggio is the son of seven-time MLB All-Star and Houston Astros legend Craig Biggio, who was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2015. The younger Biggio he has yet to quite live up to the family name in his own MLB career, batting .227 over six seasons. 2024 has been a career-worst year for Biggio, too, as he was hitting .200 with a .614 OPS in 44 games for Toronto before his DFA.

There is some value though in Biggio’s positional versatility. While he is primarily a second baseman, Biggio has experience at every position in the field except for pitcher and catcher. He also had some strong moments early on in his career, so the NL West-leading Dodgers will be hoping for Biggio to recapture even a little bit of that magic.
